Mason’s Mortarboard

Construction at Mason

More Parking Is Always Good News

On an expanding campus that’s home to a growing number of students, there’s one topic of conversation that frequently arises: parking.

For the last two years, Mason’s Fairfax Campus has adjusted to a number of parking lot closures. In most cases, new academic buildings and student housing projects were taking the place of these old lots.

RapDecksmallBut in one case, the space formerly known as Lot F that held 939 parking spaces was closed in order to build a ginormous, five-level, 2,650 space parking deck. Officially named the Rappahannock River Parking Deck, it has sections available for students, employees and visitors – much like Sandy Creek Parking Deck, but with twice the capacity.

Now that the deck has reached completion, it’s time to celebrate. The grand opening will be held on Thursday, August 13 at 10 a.m. at the southeast corner of the deck across the street from the Hampton Roads residence hall.

Dr. Merten will take the liberty of being the first person to park in the deck.

Cake and beverages will be available and gifts will be given out. Though the deck is complete, it will not officially open to all vehicles until Mason receives the necessary occupancy permit. The permit is expected to be awarded within the next week.

Good stuff GMU! Parking has always been a hassle at Mason. Great to know they’re building more spots to accomodate the growing enrollment numbers. I’ve been looking at the master plan and the administration needs to start the SW master plan asap. Lets get the parking lots started by next year! Go Mason!

Outstanding news. This opens the door for the last segment of the NE Sector project and promises to improve the parking and traffic situation. I am continually amazed at the scope and breadth of campus development that is happening simultaneously.

Now if we could just get a video scoreboard for the Patriot Center. ;>)

Rappahannock River Parking Deck Opens Monday August 24/Reserved Deck Permits Still Available

Starting at approximately 7 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2009, the Rappahannock River Parking Deck will officially be open for use by all faculty, staff and students. While there is parking for general lot and faculty/staff permits on Levels 1-2 and one bay of parking just for faculty/staff surface lot permits on Level 3, there are still reserved deck permits available for faculty/staff and students where you can guarantee yourself a space.

The reserved deck permits are sold in limited quantity and are $450 annually. If eligible for payroll deduction, an employee can sign up for a payroll deduction deck permit at the Parking Services office. An annual permit pay be purchased online at parking.gmu.edu or in the Parking Services office between August 24-26 or in the SUB II ballroom from August 27-September 4(closed Sunday). Check the parking website for sales hours.

Faculty/staff reserved deck permits are only valid on Level 3 inside the Rappahannock River deck, but are also valid in all faculty/staff and general student parking lots. Reserved student permits are only valid on levels 4-5 inside the Rappahannock River Deck, but are also valid in all general student lots. A reserved deck permit requires the use of an access card which requires a $25 refundable deposit.
